In Maths today KP revisited length and we were given a piece of streamer. Our task was to move around the classroom to find as many objects as we could that were longer than, or shorter than, our streamer. Firstly we had to make some guesses, or estimations, about what objects we thought would be longer, taller or shorter than our streamer. Then it was time for action! We were careful to put the two lengths side by side to compare, always lining up on one side to make sure we were measuring correctly. Our streamers also curled up, so we had to straighten them to measure correctly. We recorded our findings in our maths journal. We were so clever that at the end of maths time we lined up our streamers, side by side (aligned along the edge of the mat) to compare their length. We lined them up from shortest to longest. This was tricky, it took a lot of talking, moving, swapping and changing where our streamers were, but we worked it out in the end!

Continuing our work on length this week KP read the book 'Chrysanthemum' by Kevin Henkes. We enjoyed the story very much, but we were also amazed to discover how long her name is. Chrysanthemum has 13 letters in her name - half the number of letters in the alphabet! We wondered who had the shortest name in our class and who had the longest. We decided we could count the letters, but we also thought we could measure the length of our names by comparing them visually - lined up against each other. To compare fairly and accurately we cut and pasted same sized letters into same sized grids (so no gaps or overlaps). We also made sure we aligned the names at one end on the floor. We discovered Mia and Ben have the shortest names, and Harriet and Addison have the longest.
Here is the story 'Chrysanthemum' below to enjoy again at home.
This week in maths KP started investigating length. We've been using words such as long, short, tall, longer, shorter, taller, shortest, longest, tallest and the same as. We were given a paddle pop stick and we went searching around our classroom for items we thought were shorter or longer than our stick. We gathered up our items and put them on our tables. We learnt that to compare the lengths of different items accurately we have to line them up at one end. We even had a go at ordering our items from shortest to longest and we did a really good job! We thought we'd see if we could then line up ourselves in order of our heights, from shortest to tallest. There was lots of talking, moving around and swapping until we thought we had it just right! And no cheating was allowed by standing on chairs, we all had to line up on the floor to make it fair and accurate. We also enjoyed watching 'How Big is the Magic Bus?' with Flynn and Dodley. Here is the link below if you would like to watch it again at home. Do you think the bus was magic?
