As part of our work on area and 2D shapes in maths, we experimented with the concept of mosaics today. We used different sized squares, rectangles and triangles to cover the area of our special cardboard mosaic fish plaque. We tried really hard to follow the concept of mosaics by decorating and covering the area of our fish with our small coloured paper shapes. Our beautiful fish are now hanging up in our classroom.

We continued with our investigation of area in maths this week. We now know that area is how large or small a surface is. We thought we could easily compare the area of our shoe-prints to see whose shoe-print was the largest in area. Yesterday Mrs Dowling traced her shoe-print and also helped Grug to trace his. Straight away we could see the area of Mrs Dowling's shoe-print was much larger than Grug's. We carefully traced our own shoe-print and cut it out. This showed us the area of our foot-print. Today in maths we had the time to actually compare our shoe-prints and record our findings in our maths journals. We also made a hat today and we had to cover the main top area of our hat with coloured squares, triangles and rectangles. We have enjoyed learning about area!
Open and closed shapes, lines, ribbons, pipe cleaners and Grug. What do these things have to do with us investigating area? Please watch our slideshow below to see what we discovered today.
