Today we had our first Monday Monster Challenge! On Mondays we now have to read a description of a monster. During the day we draw what we think the monster would look like. What a great effort by everyone today!

Lots of moving in our science lesson today. We played "Chance Dance" with two dice - one to tell us how to move and the other determining speed, direction and height. Lots of fun, but we had to think very carefully about how we were going to move.

It was a Dance2bfit marathon! The dance teacher asked KP to dance all four dances they had learnt so far today! They did themselves proud remembering all the moves to all their dances. So here is a special Dance2bfit marathon edition! All children should sleep very well tonight!
What a wonderful day of celebrating Australian literature with our visit from author John Heffernan today as well as it being National Simultaneous Storytime. A super busy day! We thoroughly enjoyed meeting and listening to John talk about his life, his books and his passion for writing. We are inspired to try our best with our writing and never give up!
National Simultaneous Storytime is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. It is meant to happen at 11:00am, but that being our lunchtime at HPS makes it difficult. We have also started celebrating early this year because we have our author visit tomorrow at school and it will be a super busy day!
KP loved this year's book "I Got This Hat" written by Jol and Kate Temple and illustrated by Jon Foye. We have made a pirate hat, a shape hat and also had some fun with the iPad app. Please take a look! "I Got This Hat" With KP from Sue Dowling on Vimeo.
If you would like to enjoy the book again at home, click on this link below. Please note that this link will only be active until this Friday May 27. Enjoy!
Now . . . what kind of hats do you like to wear?
As part of our science unit "On The Move" our lesson on Monday was about toys that move. We all brought in a toy from home and we had to predict how the toys would move. We then watched them in action. We wrote about our toy in our science journal.

Inspired by one of our friend's Lego model we then enjoyed making things that move with our classroom Lego.
We continued with our investigation of area in maths this week. We now know that area is how large or small a surface is. We thought we could easily compare the area of our shoe-prints to see whose shoe-print was the largest in area. Yesterday Mrs Dowling traced her shoe-print and also helped Grug to trace his. Straight away we could see the area of Mrs Dowling's shoe-print was much larger than Grug's. We carefully traced our own shoe-print and cut it out. This showed us the area of our foot-print. Today in maths we had the time to actually compare our shoe-prints and record our findings in our maths journals. We also made a hat today and we had to cover the main top area of our hat with coloured squares, triangles and rectangles. We have enjoyed learning about area!
We learnt a new dance to a favourite Hi-5 song today.
As part of our science unit "On The Move" our lesson on Monday was about playground play. We had to think about how we moved on the different playground equipment and what body parts we need to move to be able to walk, slide, crawl, climb, balance etc. This science lesson definitely called for some practical investigation so we went straight up to the top oval to test out our bodies on the playground equipment!
We returned to the classroom for sharing and discussion about what we discovered and we recorded one way we moved on the playground equipment with an illustration and accompanying sentence. We recorded our voices using the 'Explain Everything' app on the iPad. Please have a look below.

We finished of this lesson today with some craft. We made a slide for Grug so he didn't feel left out! (The craft glue certainly had a good workout!!)
Open and closed shapes, lines, ribbons, pipe cleaners and Grug. What do these things have to do with us investigating area? Please watch our slideshow below to see what we discovered today.
